Important Copyright Information
Copyright Clearance:
- Kurtzweil Designs will handle all paperwork and dealings with copyright
owner $25 per filing + any fees charged by the copyright holder. Organizations may choose to
secure their own copyright arrangements and supply Kurtzweil Design with the proper paperwork.
Why Is Copyright Important?
- Copyright violation fines can be exhorbitant (in some cases topping $200,000). In most cases,
these fines are levied against the organization hiring the arranger.
- Any piece of music not in the public domain is copyrighted. Kurtzweil Designs will not provide
services using music that has not been released by the owner of its copyright.
- In most cases, copyright releases are granted to an organization to use for a period of one year
under the agreement that the released arrangements not be shared with other organizations or
published.
- The majority of copyright owners charge a fee for the use of their music. Most publishers charge a
flat fee per title.
- Music that has been previously arranged and performed is still required to obtain copyright
clearance for the use of the music.
